The history of the Department of Computer Science begins with the order of the Sumy Branch of Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute No. 144-I of September 15, 1990, on the establishment of the Department of Applied Mathematics. Leonid Filshtynsky, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, was appointed the Head of the Department. The department organized and conducted the educational process in the disciplines of computer science and computational mathematics.

In 1991, Volodymyr Liubchak, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor, became the Head of the Department.Under his leadership, a team of qualified specialists was formed, an educational and methodological base was created, and students began training in the specialty of Applied Mathematics.

In 1993, the Department established the Center for Computer Technologies and laid the foundations for the Institute’s computer information network.The automated management system “University”, the system of distance learning and Web resources of the university were put into operation.

In 2000, the department received a license to train students in the specialty of Computer Science.

According to Order No. 125-I of June 20, 2002, as a result of the structural reorganization of the Department of Applied Mathematics, the Department of Informatics was organized as an independent structural unit, which was charged with training specialists in the specialty “Informatics”, and training in the specialty “Applied Mathematics” was entrusted to the Department of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics.

Since 2008, the Department of Informatics has been headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Dovbysh Anatolii Stepanovych.

According to the order No. 69-I of February 11, 2009, the Department of Informatics merged with the Department of Design Information Technologies, which became part of the Department of Informatics as the section “Design Information Technologies” – the head of the section is PhD, Associate Professor Vira Shendryk.

According to the order No. 572-I of June 30, 2010, the Department of Computerized Control Systems was incorporated into the Department of Informatics as the section “Computerized Control Systems” – the head of the section is Oleksii Drozdenko, PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Associate Professor.

In 2010, the section “Informatics” was created on the basis of the specialty “Computer Science” – the head of the section is PhD, Associate Professor Oleksandr Chekalov.

In 2010, the Department of Informatics was renamed the Department of Computer Science due to the expansion of the list of training programs.

In 2013, the department opened a master’s program in Information and Communication Technologies.

In 2016, the department opened a postgraduate program in the specialty 122 “Computer Science”.

In 2016, the department received a license to train students in the specialty 125 “Cybersecurity”.

According to the order No. 0748-I of July 28, 2021, the Department of Computer Science was reorganized and three separate departments were separated from it: Information Technology, Cybersecurity and Computerized Control Systems.
